Energy conservation is currently under unprecedented scrutiny and it must be said, not before time. Aside from lots of spoken and published nonsense using quasi-scientific arguments for and against various solutions, it is obvious that we use too much energy. Energy conservation is important for servers as they have to be powered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to perform the tasks for which they have been designed. Common sense dictates that tasks are chosen carefully and handled efficiently but economically. This in turn should lead to the hardware and software design of a server that does just that. Not more than is necessary and not less than is needed.

Z1 Gem has been designed in its hardware, software and maintenance aspects to comply with this common sense approach.

• Z1 GEM uses much less energy than a conventional server. Standard GEM consumes 45W! This is less than the dimmest of household bulbs.
• VIA CPU uses only 1W when idle - which is most of the time
• Z1 GEM produces much less heat and noise than a conventional server. Standard GEM generates 46db noise at a distance of 1m at it's maximum activity!
• Z1 GEM and all of its components follow the European WEEE directive on recycling.

We could not find any data on power consumption published by the major manufacturers but we have our own data on servers and storage servers that we collected and continiue to collect ourserlves. Z1 GEM takes 3-4 TIMES less power than the usual tower server and is much quieter, making life in the office much more comfortable. Another neglected point in energy conservation arguments is the remote access to computers making many journeys unnecessary. All of these aspects are crucial for running businesses efficiently.
